5 Beauty Resolutions and How to Keep Them

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

We know the old standby New Year’s resolutions: quit smoking, lose weight, get in shape, etc. Blah, blah, blah. Free yourself with some beauty resolutions you can really stick to and make this a beautiful year!

I Will Wash My Face Before Bed

We are all guilty of going to bed with our makeup on occasionally. After a night out or a long day, we just want to get to sleep and forget that key step in our routine. However, it can lead to more stress later. Makeup, no matter how natural it is, is not meant to be slept in so give your skin a good cleanse before you go to sleep to prevent irritation, breakouts and clogged pores. Remove makeup with Ava Anderson Non-Toxic Makeup Remover Pads ($14.95); one pad removes a face full of makeup! Then cleanse with Farmaesthetics Fine Herbal Cleanser ($32), which has only five ingredients and provides a natural cleansing for a fresh face.

I Will Try That Haircut/Color

Guess what? Hair grows back. And yes, if you go to another color, for the most part, you can go back. If you are pining for a haircut that would put you into the “risk taker” category or there is a color you covet, your best bet is to sit down with a stylist and see what is realistic for your face shape, hair type and lifestyle. A stylist with know-how will be honest with you about how far you can push your boundaries and that is a very exciting thing! Head over to Taaz to virtually try on hairstyles and colors!

I Will Treat Myself More

We think nothing of spending $5 for coffee or a few bucks here and there for a random pastry or sandwich. But many of us balk at the idea of treating ourselves to regular manicures, massages or facials. If you put all of the money you spend on non-essentials towards some beauty services, you will refreshed, confident and at ease. Try a manicure ($16) at Young Nails in East Greenwich, a Clearing Facial ($50) at the Apothecary Newport or go with a Relaxation Massage ($65 for one hour) at Heart in Hand Massage Therapy in Warwick.

I Will Say Goodbye to Old Products

Get a trash bag and wave bye bye to your old, aged products and replenish your stash. Old lipstick (but there’s still some in there!), old perfume (there’s a spritz or two left in the straw!) and old mascara (it’s solid but still works) need to get garbage bound so you can start the New Year afresh. Mascara should be replaced every 3-6 months depending on frequency of use. Lipstick needs to be refreshed every 6 months or so and perfume has a longer shelf life as long as it’s away from light and sun. Do yourself a favor and toss the old stuff, which can lead to irritation, infection and bacterial nastiness and get some fresh, new products…it’ll make you feel new, too!

I Will Define My Own Beauty

No matter what advice we give you here, the point of beauty is to make you look and feel beautiful. But that definition is up to you. What products you use, the way you use them and the way you carry yourself are up to you and it is your message you send to the world. Be yourself, push your boundaries and overall, have fun! Happy Beautiful New Year!
