5 Ways To Look Great In Cold Weather

Just because you are bundled up against the cold does not mean you need to look frumpy while doing it. Here's how to rock the winter look.

A quick jaunt to Montreal will show you how to look chic in cold weather. Our Canadian sisters with their higher geographic coordinate and constant snowfall have winter chic mastered. And since our winter so far, seems to be “Canadian” in nature, here’s how you can be stylishly warm and avoid looking frumpy.

Coats--go for the fit

No doubt your fear with the down coat is that it will increase your size. But the new down alternatives are packed tighter and thinner with the same great insulating properties. When you choose one, look for shaping or slimming princess seams. Some manufacturers have finally figured out these utilitarian garments needed a few charming touches too, so look for double breasted buttons, trims, and metallic colors. The most important thing is the fit, however. Keep it close to the body without constriction. Let your curves show through and no one will mistake you for Bigfoot.

Hats--make them a statement

Mom already told you most body heat escapes from the head, so why not put a lid on it? Go for a mohair beret in a lovely jewel tone, a warm black felted Fedora, or steal Ali McGraw’s classic preppy knit hat from Love Story. It will up the chic quotient especially if it’s in a yummy color that coordinates with your coat. And just because you’re thinking it, dreaded hat hair can be kept at bay with a few stashed hair products in your drawer at work.

Boots--avoid the utilitarian

Warm boots are a must-have but kick it up a notch with a sleek snow boot with a toasty lining. On wet snow days, choose a waterproof boot with a glossy finish. And don’t forget the “little black dress” of boots - the black leather flat. On below zero wind-chill days layer tights with wool socks for extra warmth and protection before pulling on boots. Hard-working but streamlined and sexy. No galoshes or platypus snowshoes for you.

Scarves--your hottest accessory

In case you've been living under a rock, scarves are hot right now. Try a wool infinity scarf for real style and warmth. They are one gigantic circle that loops around your neck and keeps the wind and biting snow out. Match your scarf to your hat or choose a complimentary color that picks up the tones of your coat. Have fun with it – you don't have to look like a mummy, just a soft loose wrap in a gorgeous color wound becomingly around your neck.

Mittens and Gloves--go artisan

There's something really cute about a pair of mittens and the air between the fingers keeps hands warmer than gloves. If grandma doesn't knit, look for some handmade ones at local boutiques. Leather gloves are always chic and especially comfortable if they are lined in cashmere. Try color if your outerwear is neutral. A black coat, boots, and hat will look great with the pop of red gloves. Or go for a little leopard print or fur trim.

So when those Canadian winds whip into town, dump the frump and take a page from our northern sisters. Fight back with chic and warmth 'cuz Baby, it's cold outside.
