ALPHA MALE: Why Real Men Need Manicures

Wednesday, October 05, 2011

Many years ago, society came to the conclusion that manicures are strictly for women and ladylike men. The myth goes that only homosexual and metrosexual men spend time getting manicures. Today, we are going to debunk this myth and explain why manicures belong on the same masculine playing field as getting a shave, barbershops, and hockey fights.

On average, men only show 7% of their physical body.  Not surprisingly, the majority of this 7% is made up of one’s face and hands – almost everything else goes covered by clothing.  Men have come to terms with taking care of their hair and face; most men with any reasonable style receive a haircut monthly and take care of their faces daily.  In sharp contrast, less than 1% of men get manicures.

Don't be afraid. It's not that complicated.

After taking an informal survey, we learned that most men don’t really even know exactly what getting a manicure entails.  A typical manicure begins with one’s finger nails – the edges are filed and shaped…and the cuticles cleaned.  Once the nails are finished, a series of oils are used to soften and relax the hands.  The result is simple, healthy and well-conditioned hands.

Take a moment to think about all of the things in life that start with your hands.

The man of style is able to close business deals with a sharp handshake…and pick up women with that same smooth hand.  A well-conditioned hand reflects confidence and style – true masculinity.

There are plenty of great places around Providence for a man's manicure; I like Justina Nails on the East Side (744 Hope St, Providence, 264-0811). Manicures aren’t about being masculine or feminine; they are about relaxation and style.  Pamper yourself; set aside 30 minutes next week and debunk the myth.

As both the president and owner of Marc Allen Inc, Marc Streisand takes the custom clothing business very personally. Having enjoyed a successful career in the clothing industry since 1985, Marc brings his clients extensive specialized experience in menswear. Prior to taking over the Marc Allen store in March 2005, he cultivated his knowledge of luxury male attire in New York and his home state of New Jersey, where he began his vocation at Wallach's Specialty Stores. Nothing gives him greater pleasure, he says, than seeing raw cloth transformed into a custom outfit that can directly impact his customer's lifestyle.
