For believers, spring IS coming. And if so, it will bring a bold new palette in makeup. The fresh colors are unflinching but they will wear as soft as an impressionist painting. Winter’s back is far from broken, but dreaming about the gentlest season and its cheerful offerings will keep us all pointed toward that elusive vernal equinox.

True nail colors

Your instinct may be to paint on pale pink or a translucent nude, but you’ll love the power-packing orange-reds. Brighter than the expected corals and peaches, it will give added punch to neutral spring tranches and jeans. Wearable hues also include optimistic blues but not the frosted kind. Lipstick

Here you will master the art of balancing strength of color with subtlety of application. Look for stains and glosses but in the colors of happiness. Silly as it sounds, even the names of lipsticks will tip you off that spring is arriving. Dior’s Garden Party looks like a lip balm in the tube but brightens with a stainy color that calls out for a floral bedecked straw hat and a gin and tonic. Eyes

Leave the smoky eye back in February. Maize, kale, dove grey, and buttercream are spring fresh and new. A soft halo of color that circles the eye is brightening and renewing.
