New England Vintage Chic: Summer Vintage Must-Haves

Monday, June 10, 2013

Vintage swimwear is sexy, flattering, and back in style. Here's how to get it.

Summer feels like it’s already arrived in New England... Meaning, it’s time to get yourself summer vintage ready with the must-haves of the summer. Adding a little vintage into your summer pep is easy. So keep reading, and get ready to enter a summer filled with endless laughter, hip music and chic attire.

Must-Have #1: Vintage-Inspired Bathing Suit

You want to look as if you stepped out of the 1940’s? Then start by wearing a vintage bathing suit. The high wasted bikini and belted one-suits are in, putting the thong bikini on the back burner (sorry boys.) To find a true vintage bathing suit you can shop your local vintage stores and use online sources such as ebay & etsy. If wearing a second-hand bathing suit is not your thing, don’t worry, this season many designers are adding a vintage look into their style lines.

Try Modcloth.com for some great finds.

Must-Have #2: Vintage Sunglasses

Sunglasses from another era is a quick way to look vintage chic. Try vintage Ray Bans or Chanel shades to really have your friends drooling. To find a pair, first try your local second-hand stores. The really nice shades are always held in a glass case near the front, so be sure to ask for help.

Shop for them at Crompton Collective,138 Green St., Worcester; Alexis Grace Consignment, 7 Harrison St., Worcester.

Must-Have #3: Vintage Music

Put away the Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga soundtracks and pull out some real music to get your vintage vibes grooving. Make a mix of vintage music that you have never heard and call it your “vintage inspiration playlist.” Trust me - there is nothing like taking a trip back to the good old days than playing music from that era.

Need help with a playlist? Visit your local second-hand music shops for help. If you’re shopping iTunes only, give these artists a try - Otis Redding, Jackson Brown, Van Morrison, Jodi Mitchell, Miles Davis and Tina Turner.

Shop for it at Jelly Discs, 246 Park Ave, Worcester.

Must-Have #4: Vintage Denim Shorts

I love denim shorts. They go with everything and are comfortable at the same time. My trick: I go to a local thrift shop, buy a pair of vintage jeans for under $6 and cut them into shorts. To get the frayed look wash them a few times. If craft time is not your thing, head to your local vintage shops to get vintage shorts.

Shop for them at The Haberdash Vintage Truck, and on this great etsy site, here.

Taylor Kloss lives for the hunt—to find that one-of-a-kind piece that no one else has and to put amazing outfits together on a tight budget. To share her passion with the world and encourage shopping at vintage, thrift and consignment stores, she blogs on New England Vintage Chic, a journey of her adventures, advice, styles, and reviews of local second-hand stores throughout New England.
