The LOOK: Day Looks Into Night

Friday, August 12, 2011

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and he's GoLocalProv's weekly style expert. Frank Barbosa, the Newport-based celebrity stylist, brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.

We've all been rocking the pony this summer, as it's been the go-to do, but how to turn the daytime pull-back into a nighttime stunner? Here are three secrets for turning your daytime pony into an evening look for those last-minute dinner meetings or after-work drinks.

1. Start with a low braid

Make your pony for the day a low braid. When evening rolls around and you need a fresh look, just release! Brush through with your fingers and run a hand through the top layer. Then, tip over, spray the underside and voila: full, sexy waves.

2. Start with a rope braid

Set your hair in the morning in a rope braid: turn two pieces in the same direction, then band the end when done. Pin it into a low bun for the day. Ready for night? Release it, and with a wide-tooth comb, comb it through and polish with silk drops or your favorite anti-frizz cream or serum. Chic and glamorous!

3. Start with finger curls

Get your pony set, then separate five pieces into finger curls, securing each with a bobby pin. Pop on a hair net to keep them safe. Sun going down? Cocktails calling? Release the net and pins and you'll have beautiful curls. Set them with spray, wear a great clip to the side, and you're off to the parties!

Happy styling! x

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's just finished styling on location alongside film stylist Alan D'Angerio on the film, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair at Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup in Newport.
