The LOOK: Full Hair and How to Get It

Thursday, March 24, 2011

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and now he's GoLocalProv's weekly style expert. Frank Barbosa, the Newport-based celebrity stylist, brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.

When any one thinks beautiful hair it's always a vision of thick, full, healthy hair, right?

With every decade of hair trends and fashion images, it's always the full crowning glory that stops us in our tracks and has us wondering if our hair is still thick and full as it was when we were, say, 16 (or if we can achieve full hair if we were not crowned with a full heavy head of hair).

Here are a couple of full hair tricks to achieve and show off beautiful thick or thick-looking hair:

Product

There are great products available to create thickness and fullness. Vegetal styling mousse by Renne Furterer is one of the greats as well as Ojon styling liquid mousse. Apply only at root as you blow dry using round brush. Hold brush at 90 degrees as reach maximum volume.

Roll

Hot rollers are still a girl's best go-to; remember you don't have to roll your whole head...  three will suffice. The top of your crown area is great for fullness - set them in a pie formation.

Back comb

It worked in the '60s and '70s... why wouldn't it still work today? Back comb your root area but remember to smooth top layer over, back combing for a relaxed, full look.

Clip and release

A great stylist trick is to clip hair up to let air dry then release when dry and use working spray. It&ly working spritz works best and has a non-aerosol can that's good on your lungs and the environment.

Remember: most importantly, feel comfortable in your look. Play 'til the look will stay. Have fun with it!

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's currently styling on location alongside film stylist Alan D'Angerio on the film, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair.
