The LOOK: Hair Extensions

Saturday, July 30, 2011

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and now he's GoLocalProv's weekly style expert. Frank Barbosa, the Newport-based celebrity stylist, brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.

After last week's journey into temporary hair color, this week let's talk about adding a splash of color with a trusty hair extension. We're lucky to live in a day and age where we can just add a chunk strip or a whole head of different color, different texture, even a whole different look to our locks without being thought of someone who thinks way too far outside the box.

So let's have fun! Grab your colors and please don't worry about coloring outside the lines.

Thick

When you feel like making a statement or creating a signature look, try a thick piece of hair extension color . How about a white, a pink, or whatever color you're known for? Wear it low behind your ear for a peekaboo effect with the right outfit and jewelry, and watch heads turn toward the fashionista!

Strips

Night out with the girls? Feeling sassy? Grab a strip. It clips easily, and you can have your local salon make them for you or you can make them yourself when you're not jetting around town fitting in all that RI has to offer this summer. I recommend 2 strips for drama -  wear them pretty low in the back and pick a color that is about 3 times lighter than your own, but still complements your tone.

Where to get them

I'm letting a secret out of the bag here! My go-to place in RI is a local business called Two Brothers Beauty Supply . They've got 2 locations, but I favor the Westminster location in the old Watch Hospital (207 Westminster). They sell those tiny clips plus so much more. Check them out.

Now get out there and turn some heads. I'll be watching! x

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's just finished styling on location alongside film stylist Alan D'Angerio on the film, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair at Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup in Newport.
