The LOOK: Hip Inspirations from New York

Monday, March 26, 2012

Dare to be yourself and set the trend: hipster wisdom from NYC.

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and he's GoLocalProv's weekly style expert. Frank Barbosa, the Newport-based celebrity stylist, brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.
Working in New York last week was great as always and fulfilling on a creative level.

Because let's face it: People-watching in NY on a 70-degree weather day in March is something to behold, where fashionistas and hipsters are showing their true colors.

Which brings me back to our little Ocean State--how lucky we are that we live so close to one of the fashion capitals of the world yet still are able to maintain our fashionable edge here 3 1/2 hours away.

So I'm looking forward to seeing what our hipsters back home have to offer this spring. Let's look at the steps for becoming your own hipster a la NYC, summoning that air of confidence and beauty.

1. First and foremost, remember: hipsters are forward-thinkers and set the trends. They refuse to be spoon-fed substance and style. They support local businesses, and draw focus to where they're being spotted.

2. Seek out professionals to help you try out new looks so that you feel comfortable and confident sporting your one-of-a-kind look.

3. Nourish the mind as well as the body. Good hair and make-up, clothing and most of all--smarts--will get you far. Watch yourself become one of the sought-after friends confidants, advice mavens, etc.

4. And what I think is the most important: get politically involved. It's what sets us apart.

So let's rock our hipster selves this season!

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's just finished styling on location alongside film stylist Alan D'Angerio on the film, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair at Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup in Newport.
