Frank Barbosa, GoLocalWorcester Style Expert

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and he's GoLocal's weekly style expert. Frank Barbosa, the Newport-based celebrity stylist, brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.

We witnessed yet another Oscar season last week and boy, was it glamorous. Every year around this time, fashionistas are raving over dresses, hair and makeup, so of course our beauty savvy girls are all a-twitter about how they will incorporate these looks into their own. For upcoming events in your life—whether a wedding party or date night—here are some tips to achieve that red carpet look.

1. Messy, not hot messy, updos

Make sure a messy updo is not a hot messy up do, meaning it should be a relaxed updo so there are still elements of form and structure to it but not so coifed. It's imperative to let your stylist know that you want a relaxed look as opposed to a messy one.

2. Complexion is all

Make-up is all about skin, so skip the lip and opt for a fresh, clean, perfected complexion. Remember: when you want a natural, flawless look, it sometimes requires a little more makeup than usual (concealer foundation powder for highlighting, etc.).  So, don't get nervous when sitting for makeup 'til the finished look is achieved.

3. Watch the down 'do

We always see and hear that a good dress is destroyed by a down do. For example, Jennifer Aniston this year looked a little juvenile in her pretty princess look and lost all sexuality. That hair would have looked great with maybe a pant suit or pencil skirt, but not for red carpet. Sometimes a woman feels safe covering up her features with her hair but it says nothing about confidence. When attending a major function, go big.

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's just finished styling on location alongside film stylist Alan D'Angerio on the film, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair at Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup in Newport.
