The LOOK: Style Resolutions in the New Year

Thursday, December 30, 2010

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and now he's GoLocalProv's weekly style expert. Frank Barbosa, the Newport-based celebrity stylist, brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.

Coming up on the beginning of a new decade it's time to start seriously thinking about a new hair resolution.

First off, many of us get stuck in a five-year look, but the older we get it starts to become a 10-year look. It's 2011, and time to change all that. Here are a few tips on how to work towards a new you for 2011. Get excited!

1. Make a List

Make a list of three things you love about your hair, and then three things you dislike about your hair. Keep that little list handy, so you can refer to it when you meet your stylist for your new-do do-over.

2. Change Your Color

Yep. No matter what, it's time to change your color for the New Year... ever so slightly. Remember skin tone is everything, so don't think too far outside the box. In fact, don't even think about a box when it comes to hair color! Leave it up to the pros - you won't be sorry.

3. Snap Some Pics

You'll need to have pictures of yourself, especially ones where you really liked your hair. Sometimes we stray away from a then-new, hip look that was really working for us. Now it's time to update that, so pictures are great. Never feel embarassed about bringing a look book you created with you to your stylist. It helps us out!

4. Wake Up Your Stylist

Sometimes your styist falls into a ten-year funk as well, so don't blame yourself about it all. Maybe with this hair change comes changes of all sorts! Whatever you choose, here's to happy hair-hunting and a great (and good-looking) 2011.

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair.
