BJ’s, Webster Bank and Shaws Announce Store Closings

Thursday, January 06, 2011

It is a veritable right of passage - retailers announcing the closings of stores each January. In the past 48 hours, BJ's Wholesale Club, Shaw's supermarket, and Webster Bank all announced store/branch closings in the region.

Each spun the announcements slightly differently, but the reality it is the natural prunning of under performing locations with the adverse reality for retailers of layoffs.

Shaws is closing stores in two RI locations - one in Warwick and one in Johnston.  Those store will be mothballed by mid-February according to the retailer.

Most of BJ's job cuts come at the HQ in Natick or around the country.  Five Webster branches being closed are all in Connecticut.
