The
Workforce Central Career Center (WCCC) joined the
Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development to highlight the successful completion of the first training program completed through the new model called the Southern Worcester County Manufacturing Consortium (SWCMC).
SWCMC was launched in 2012 in partnership with WCCC, the Central Massachusetts Workforce Investment Board (CMWIB), and the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP), and has since teamed up with five local manufacturing companies to fulfill a common training need.
The celebration took place at Incom, Inc., one of the five participating companies. The four other companies joined including G&F Industries, HT Machine, A&M Tool and Die, and Swissturn/ USA, Inc.
The collaborative workforce training program developed after these five companies first notified WCCC of similar training needs. Career Center staff then connected the owners of the five local companies with the CMWIB and MassMEP to discuss the possibility of creating a program where each of the smaller companies could address their individual training needs while reaping the efficiencies of partnering on a joint training effort. After initially forming this partnership in 2012, SWCMC applied for and received a $103,675 Workforce Training Fund (WTFP) grant to train approximately 64 employees across the five manufacturers.
“This is a great example of effective collaborative between regional workforce organizations and the business community working together to boost resources and support the needs of both employers and workers in Central Massachusetts and the Commonwealth,” said Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Joanne F. Goldstein. “Traditionally, employers have utilized the Workforce Training Funds to train their employees in job-related skills in a program designed by the company, where they handle their own training and administration of the grant. Through the SWCMC, we were able to fund a first-of-its-kind training program utilizing the economies of scale to help multiple companies meet their training needs.”
“The consortium model benefits all of the players involved,” said Jeff Turgeon, CMWIB Director. “Our office handled the coordination and administration of the WTFP grant, taking that responsibility off of the employers who could then focus on training their employees through MassMEP,” Turgeon added.
The training, offered through MassMEP, focused on basic manufacturing skills training like shop math, metrology, and blue print reading, as well as more advanced machine skills and Computer-Numerical Control (CNC) training.
“This training model offers manufacturing firms, especially small to medium sized ones, the opportunity to invest in their workers and give them the cutting edge skills needed for the fast-changing industry,” said Jack Healy, Director of Operations at MassMEP.
