Coakley Stands By Actions of Market Basket Employees

Tuesday, July 22, 2014

Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate Martha Coakley has released a statement of support of the ongoing situation at Market Basket where employees are working to re-install their former CEO.

Employees of the regional supermarket chain have been in an uproar as of late in an ongoing movement to re-install former CEO Arthur T. Demoulas. A variety of protests and rallies have been planned by employees in an effort to show the new management how unsatisfied they are with potential changes.

"The actions of thousands of Market Basket employees over the last days have been truly inspiring.," said Coakley. "They are putting their jobs on the line -- with little or no protection from reprisals from current management - to stand up for the simple principle that workers deserve to be treated with respect and their voices deserve to be heard.  I hope the current management of Market Basket will respect these voices and that these employees will be able to make their case without losing their jobs or their hard earned benefits. Market Basket has been a great employer and community partner for decades and I hope those values are maintained."

Employees are upset because under new management, they may lose many of their benefits, which are noted as being very strong for a grocery store. Under new management, employees are fearful that these benefits may be cut or eliminated altogether, in an effort to shift to a more profit oriented system for company executives. Additionally, employees are worried that the company may be sold or merged.

Several management-level employees who have helped to organize opposition against the new executives have already been fired.
