Coyne Named Interim Administrator of Worcester Regional Transit Authority

Friday, July 24, 2015

Last week, Stephen O'Neil announced his retirement as the Administrator of the Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA). After nearly 40 years in public service, O'Neil will finish his eight-year tenure with the WRTA at the beginning of August.

The WRTA Advisory Board announced that Tom Coyne, Assistant Administrator, has been appointed Interim Administrator effective at the end of business on August 7, 2015.

“I am proud of my accomplishments while serving as the WRTA Administrator,” said O’Neil. “We’ve taken an entity that was on the verge of closing to one that is recognized as one of the strongest and most progressive transit authorities in the Commonwealth.”

When O'Neil took over at the WRTA, the organizaiton was debt-ridden. However, after seven consecutive years of a balanced budget, forward fudning from the State Legislature, elimination of debts, clean audits, and increased ridership, the WRTA is one of the strongest transit authorities in the state.

Under O'Neil's leadership, the city of Worcester and the WRTA have witnessed a new $14 million state-of-the-art Hub, collaborative and improved union relations, technological advancements, electric buses and an increased focus on sustainability, customer service enhancements, site development and initial construction of a new operations facility, and, most recently, a purchase offer on the Grove Street property.

“It has been a pleasure to serve in this role for nearly a decade, and I am looking forward to watching the continued momentum that the WRTA will achieve with its new leadership in the future," O'Neil added. “I want to thank Tom Coyne and my entire team, along with the Advisory Board and our ridership for many great years.”
