DCU Center Getting $17.5 Million Renovation

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

The DCU Center and City of Worcester have announced that a $17.5 million renovation and expansion project will begin on the arena this November.

The project, which will be managed by Consigli Construction Company, will begin November 1st and will be the second phase of a set of improvements that began in the summer of 2009. That summer, the City invested $8.5 million in the arena to provide upgrades to the facility's electrical vault, renovate the hockey systems, and replace the convention center carpet.

This November, the DCU Center will receive upgrades to both its interior and exterior. Interior renovations will include a redesigned box office, four new event suites, new restrooms, and an expanded concourse for retail spaces. The City will also be upgrading the arena's mechanical and electrical systems.

The DCU Center is owned by the City of Worcester and managed by SMG, the world's leading private management and developing firm for public assembly facilities.

“This planned $17.5M investment is critical to the DCU Center maintaining its status as one of the best venues of its size nationwide," Worcester City Manager Michael O'Brien said. "The Worcester region and the Commonwealth as a whole will continue to benefit from the DCU Center as an economic engine.”

O'Brien would go on to say that the majority of the construction work done in the project will be completed between May 1st and September 30th of 2013, to minimize the financial impact on Worcester's AHL hockey team, the Worcester Sharks.

"The Worcester Sharks are very excited that our partners, the City of Worcester and SMG, the management company for the DCU Center, continue to invest in the improvement of the DCU Center in order to assist our organization on the ice and for the fans to better enjoy their experience," Michael A. Mudd, President of the Worcester Sharks, said. “We look forward to the renovations and we are proud to call the DCU Center our home.”

On the outside, look for the DCU Center to receive a new facade, a digital marquee and a landscaped promenade leading into the facility. The new exterior work will be designed to complement the architectural and aesthetic design of the arena's Convention Center, and the construction efforts being done within the CitySquare project just across the street.

“The next phase of this multi-year capital improvement project is an important one as it will incorporate improved fan and client amenities," DCU Center General Manager Sandy Dunn said. "Our patrons and customers are the spirit of our industry; keeping them happy and returning ensures that the DCU Center remains competitive and sought after by advertisers, promoters and fans.”
