Is Worcester a good place to start a business, and a terrible place for Hispanic business owners?
Two recent reports paint very different images of the business environment for two different groups. A new study ranks Worcester as the 33rd best city in the United States to start a business — substantially better than one other New England city. De facto, an entrepreneurs dream.
In contrast, as GoLocalWorcester reported last week that Worcester ranks poorly for Hispanic Entrepreneurs. — the city ranks 148th out of 150 cities in the United States.
Worcester scores poorly in each of the measures in the study “Hispanic Business Friendliness” (Worcester ranks 133rd), “Hispanic Purchasing Power” (Ranks 150th) and "Lowest Median annual Income of Hispanics" (Ranks 148th).
“U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President Javier Palomarez once described Hispanic entrepreneurs as ‘America’s business future.’ Not only is the Hispanic and Latino community expected to make up a third of the entire U.S. population by 2050, but this demographic is also creating businesses at 15 times the national rate today, according to a report from analytics firm Geoscape and the USHCC,” said the report from WalletHub.
Good for Some
For best overall to start a business, Worcester ranks 40th for Business Environment, 19th for Access to resources and 109th for Cost (of doing business). Providence ranks 149th of the 150 cities ranked.
“…from restaurant owners to high-tech movers and shakers — maximize their chances for long-term prosperity, WalletHub’s analysts compared the relative startup opportunities that exist in the 150 most populated U.S. cities.”
The study looked at 16 key metrics, ranging from five-year survival rate to office-space affordability to educational attainment of the local labor force.
