NEW: Massachusetts Unemployment Dips in February

The state’s seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate dipped from 7.7 percent in January to 7.5 in February, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced.

Overall, seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates in February were down in 16 labor areas and unchanged in two. The rates went up in four areas.
The rates in all 22 labor areas decreased over the year from February 2011, when the statewide unadjusted rate was 8.2 percent.

Job gains occurred in the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, Springfield, New Bedford, Peabody, Lowell-Billerica-Chelmsford, and Pittsfield areas. Employment remained unchanged in the Brockton-Bridgewater-Easton area.

In the year since February 201, job gains were realized in nine in the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, Barnstable, Framingham, Lowell-Billerica-Chelmsford, and Peabody areas.  The largest percentage gains occurred in the Barnstable, Lowell-Billerica-Chelmsford, Framingham, and Peabody areas.
 
Adjusted, the unemployment rate in February remained at 6.9 percent for the third consecutive month and was down 0.8 percent from the 7.7-percent rate recorded in February 2011.  The statewide seasonally adjusted jobs estimate showed a gain of 9,100 jobs over the month.

The March 2012 unemployment rate, labor force data, and jobs estimates for Massachusetts will be released April 19. Local unemployment statistics will be released April 24.
