NEW: Dallas Launches Pay Model in January, Providence is Next

The Dallas Morning News will launch new iPad and iPhone apps this month in conjunction with plans to move to a paid content model in February. According to reports Providence Journal will follow with a similar or identical model.

According to reports in the Dallas Morning News today, the new iPhone and IPad paid model will launch Jan. 18, with some online and mobile content moving behind a paywall on Feb. 15.

The News in a small article unveils that a subscription to The News increased to $33.95 a month on Jan. 1, and a full digital-only subscription will cost $16.95. Presently, the Providence Journal subscription is more than $400 per year.

The Dallas paper which is owned by A.H. Belo, as is the Providence Journal, will be using Press Engine software licensed from The New York Times to power its new iPad and iPhone apps. The News’ iPhone app launched on Monday.

The Press Engine software will also be used at Belo’s papers in Providence, R.I. and Riverside, Calif.
