Protest To Take Place At Worcester Walmart Store On Black Friday

Thursday, November 28, 2013

The Massachusetts Stands Up to Walmart campaign has scheduled a protest to take place at the Worcester Walmart at 12 p.m. on Black Friday. Consisting coalition of workers, community organizations, and faith and labor leaders, the campaign is designed to stop Walmart’s planned expansion into the Greater Boston Area.

The protest scheduled at the Worcester Walmart is one of many set to take place in Massachusetts on Friday. In addition to Worcester, protests are scheduled to occur at Walmart stores in Quincy, Chelmsford, Lynn, Raynham, and Hadley.

The Bay State protest against Walmart is part of a larger movement, which has swept across the country. In total, 1,500 nationwide protests are planned to take place on Black Friday. These actions follow a wave of strikes that have occurred recently nationwide In fact, three workers from Massachusetts took part in a strike on Sunday - walking off the job.

Walmart in the News

Over the past month, Walmart has faced a growing amount of negative publicity including news that the National Labor Relations Board would pursue charges against the company over its unlawful retaliation against workers who planned to go on strike last year.

A pair of Ohio Walmart stores made headlines earlier this month when it was reported that the stores were holding employee food drives for workers who cannot afford Thanksgiving dinner.

Last Year’s Protest

In 2012, more than 1,000 strikes, walkouts, and community actions took place at Walmart stores across the country, involving over 30,000 people in 47 states. The historic Black Friday protests marked a new era of support and solidarity with Walmart workers who are standing up for better jobs, according to Jobs with Justice, who helped organize the movement.
