ShopWoo Today to Help Worcester’s Small Businesses

Cupcakes from the Queen's Cups in Millbury

All around Worcester today, people are hitting the local stores, shops, and restaurants to help support small businesses in the area. Known as ShopWoo Saturday, today is dedicated to helping the local economy and focusing on creating foot traffic into Worcester County’s small businesses.

Renee King, owner of Queen’s Cups Bakery in Millbury said, “Small Business Saturday is important to my business, as well as a lot of other local shops, because it gives customers a destination to go to with their friends or family members that may not be a part of their normal routine.”

The Positive Effects of Shopping Small Business

"When you shop at a small business, you’re not just boosting the local economy or receiving friendly service with a smile, you’re investing in your community and fueling the entrepreneurial dream.  An entrepreneur is someone who sees a challenge or a problem and turns it into an opportunity for change.  This is how we improve our community," said Erin Arvizu, owner of Wild Orchid Baby on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester.

“A lot of new customers that we have say that they have been wanting to come in, but for whatever reason, it never panned out. With a day like this that focuses on shopping small and local, it gives these customers a purpose for coming in. It is also an awesome feeling to see how many of our regular customers come by to support us as well," said King.

Erin Arvizu with her son, Vinni.

Arvizu said, "When a person shops at Wild Orchid Baby, they’re not just purchasing a ‘thing’ that will help them reach their breastfeeding goals or a cream that will clear up their baby’s eczema, they’re connecting with a friend who understands exactly what they’re going though and that’s usually the ‘thing’ they need most. Every dollar spent at Wild Orchid Baby ensures that new parents have a place in their community to find the resources, products and support they need as they make their journey through parenthood.Shopping at a small business reminds us of what we can accomplish when we set our mind to do something and this is exactly what America needs."

King said, “Buying from small businesses benefits everyone because small businesses employ our neighbors, our friends, our loved ones. It really bonds us together having a day for us to look forward to, and for our customers to look forward to as well. It is also a good feeling to know that there will be a lot of people shopping at my favorite local stores like Crompton Collective, Grime Clothing and Seed to Stem in Worcester. With the holidays coming up, everyone is looking for that thoughtful gift to give, and there are a lot of local shops that provide that. And then hopefully after their shopping sprees, they come and have a cupcake!”

Queen's Cups is located in Millbury at 238 Millbury Avenue. Wild Orchid Baby is located in Worcester at 490 Shrewsbury Street.
