Southbridge Savings Invests in Sturbridge Village Blacksmith Shop

Southbridge Savings Bank has committed to a multi-year investment to support the Blacksmith Shop at
Old Sturbridge Village through the Village’s Adopt-a-Building program. The bank’s support was recently celebrated formally at the Village, with representatives from the bank visiting the Blacksmith Shop to work with OSV’s Costumed Historians and to try their hand at the craft.
The commitment of support from Southbridge Savings Bank will allow Old Sturbridge Village to continue to preserve and care for the Blacksmith Shop under the new Adopt-a-Building program. OSV’s new Adopt-a-Building program ensures an authentic early American experience for more than 250,000 people of all ages who visit the museum each year. The museum features more than 40 historic buildings and structures that require ongoing maintenance including mills, barns, homes and sheds.
The history behind a local treasure
The Village’s Blacksmith Shop is originally from Bolton, constructed circa 1810, and was moved to Old Sturbridge Village in 1957, where it remains a favorite of visitors both young and old. The shop was built by Blacksmith Moses Wilder, who owned land adjoining a stone quarry operated by his wife’s cousins in Bolton. Wilder built the Blacksmith Shop using some 400 granite stones from the quarry to form the walls. He was able to maintain a prosperous business by making and repairing tools used in the neighboring quarry. His son, Abraham, later took over the business.

The Blacksmith Shop is often one of the exhibits here at the Village that visitors remember most. Southbridge Savings Bank’s partnership and support is greatly appreciated by all of us at the Village,” said Old Sturbridge Village President and CEO James E. Donahue.

Past projects have been renovation of the Thompson Bank and the construction of the Small House as you enter the village. We consider the village an important historical museum in our back yard and it is our privilege to continue to support it,” said Bank President Philip Pettinelli.
