Friday, June 07, 2013
The Sansoucy family prides itself upon reliable service, honest product information and prompt delivery. Whether you’re building a backyard patio or a large commercial project, the Sansoucy’s and their dedicated staff work to assure customer satisfaction.
John Sansoucy and his wife Donna bought the business from their family 22 years ago. Since then, they have worked tirelessly to offer friendly, professional customer service which they consider to be the cornerstone of their business model.
Tell me a little about your family when you were growing up. Were there any entrepreneurs in your family?
Well, our business is owned by me [John Sansoucy] and my wife Donna. Yes, we’re married and work together! We bought the business 22 years ago. My father was a builder and my grandfather was a mason who started the stone business as a side venture. His mother did the accounting for the company. Donna’s father was a marketing professional and her mom worked for the public school system in Worcester. So, needless to say, we have all all aspects covered.
Why did you choose to keep your business in Worcester, even though the original Worcester Quarry was shuttered in the mid-1980s?
We decided to keep our business in Worcester because of the central location. People in New England for the most part take pride in their homes and like to improve their homes whether it be a patio, or fireplace or replacing those old front steps. Our suppliers and customers are mainly based in Massachusetts.
What makes your business model unique?
We still operate the business behind where the original Worcester Quarry was. We are also seasonal, so we have to plan for that. We don't care for long winters! Some of our customers have been with us as long as we have been in business and we consider them friends. Our business expanded to include pavers, wall block, thin stone veneer, architectural stone, custom orders and wood pellets.
Over the years, what development would you say has had the most impact on your original plan? How has your plan changed in response?
Probably the economic and building downturn had the most impact. You also have to be adaptable to your customers needs and wants, which are always changing.
What challenges have remained the same since you started?
The most consistent challenge are still rush orders. That customer who needs a special order yesterday! The customer may not always be right, but they are always the customer!
Can you tell me about your engagement and outreach in the community?
We have a small foundation through the Greater Worcester Community Foundation which gives grants to local charities. We are members of Worcester Local First and Tatnuck Neighborhood Association. I also volunteer for the Central MA Red Cross and Why Me. You also have to try to buy local and support small business!
What advice do you have for others who are thinking about entrepreneurship?
As an entrepreneur, you must be prepared for long hours and inconsistent income in those first years. Surround yourself with people of similar work ethic. We have a fantastic staff who we can trust! Be adaptable and have fun with it!
