Ask a Bartender: 5 Best Places to Eat in Worcester After the Bars Close
Saturday, June 06, 2015
For some this is a no-brainer. For others, it is a struggle to think of anything other than the Dollar Menu. No one enjoys the McDonald’s hangover, no one. Luckily, Worcester has quite a few alternatives for late night dining. Conveniently, many of these are within walking distance to some of the most popular rows of bars in the city. So, if you got sick of waiting for your friend to stop arguing with the bartender their elusive tab, or if your designated driver ditched you long before the lights came up you can walk over and enjoy an early breakfast while you wait for your friends to get it together. Others on this list deliver so you can eat your feelings in the privacy of your own home.
Boulevard Diner – The Bouly. It’s small, and in the winter waiting in line outside might look ominous, but it is well worth the wait. There is an omelet named after each one of Worcester’s colleges so you can show your college pride on a plate. But that’s not all. Breakfast, lunch, and hearty Italian dinner options are served all day and night. For those with a steel-lined stomach, try the chili dog platter, or, another favorite, a steak and cheese on a half loaf. You’ll sleep well. The staff at the Boulevard Diner are some of the most patient around. They welcome the bar crowd with open arms. Just adhere to the known rules that it’s one-way traffic through those diner car doors.
Kenmore – There is never a bad time to eat a grilled muffin. Never. But that’s not the only reason people love the Kenmore. The Kenmore has always been a local favorite after last call, or first thing in the morning. They offer a breakfast and lunch menu so you can have your muffin with a burger if you really want. There is a bathroom inside for customers only. There’s usually a wait, but not long. They run a tight ship there, be warned. No yelling, no swearing, and no roaming from booth to booth. Get in, sit down, library voice, and enjoy your warm and delicious food.
Road Runner – Road Runner Pizza on Hamilton Street is another favorite – day or night. If you are sitting at The Cos on a Wednesday night and you’re just craving jalapeno poppers, give Road Runner a call. If you’re in the back of an Uber realizing you don’t want that CrossFit-approved lettuce wrap and
you’d rather a Meat Lover’s Calzone, treat yourself – you’ve earned it. Besides, most of the things you’ve done tonight are not CrossfFit- or even mother-approved anyways. You can surely sit down and enjoy your meal inside Road Runner’s Hamilton Street location. If you’re not ready to turn in for the night, you can certainly stop in and enjoy your guilty-pleasure inside their Hamilton Street location where they do offer a few tables for wandering patrons.
J&J Pizza Express – Perhaps one of the more underrated late night stops, J&Js is a must-try pizza place. You are missing out if you have never enjoyed their BBQ Chicken Pizza. You’ll salivate just thinking about it if you have had it. Their Broccoli Balls are borderline addictive. There are a few tables for those who want to wander in and take in all of the sights and sounds they have to offer, or you can spare them your witty banter and just ask them to deliver. Take home a slice of cheesecake for dessert if you’re really striving for excellence.
Pam Martin bartends at Compass Tavern at 90 Harding Street in Worcester every Friday night and Sunday afternoon.
