Clark University Buildings Being Heated by Waste Vegetable Oil

Thursday, January 28, 2016

Clark University

Some buildings on the Clark University campus are now heated with biofuel made directly from waste vegetable oil. This comes courtesy of the working relationship between Clark University and Sodexo.

How it Works

The waste vegetable oil is collected by the Worcester Energy Cooperative and processed into pure biofuel. A measured amount is then added to the oil tanks at 138 Woodland Street in Worcester.

“Not only does it burn much more efficiently with fewer particulates, thereby reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and keeping motors cleaner, but it represents ‘full-circle’ sustainability – the Holy Grail. Clark’s fry oil is not being wasted or added to landfills. It now heats buildings and powers equipment. Win!," said Jenny Isler, MBA, Director of Sustainability at Clark.

Over the last three years, Sustainable Clark in collaboration with the Cooperative and campus partners has gradually increased the percentage of biofuel from five percent to the current level of twenty percent.

A second delivery is planned for later in the heating season.

The Grounds Department on campus has also taken delivery of en gallons of B-100 to enable some of their equipment run greener.
