Acoustic Java: Serving up Coffee, Entertainment and Ambiance

Monday, April 09, 2012

From the groggy college student looking for a good study spot to the well-seasoned coffee connoisseur, Acoustic Java, located at 932 Main Street, has the atmosphere, entertainment, and coffee to delight a range of customers.

Soothing music fills the quaint space. Brick walls are filled with chalkboard menus, bookshelves, and local art. And you can definitely smell the coffee.

“I like the atmosphere here. It’s usually pretty busy and generally laid back, and I like my coworkers. It’s also nice interacting with a bunch of different people,” said John Preston, who has worked at the hip, bustling coffee shop for about seven months. “We get a big range of customers.”

Acoustic has it all!

Perhaps part of their success in garnering a wide audience is their many events and activities at the café.

“As music tames the savage beast, coffee civilizes man unkind.” As their motto suggests, Acoustic Java is committed to music.

Acoustic Java’s namesake comes from their longtime devotion to the arts. The coffee shop is always featuring local talent and opens its doors to performers who are looking for a laid-back intimate venue. To keep up with who’s playing when, check out the calendar of events on their website. This Friday, come hear Joanne Hart play acoustic folk from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Flint Blade will perform an hour-long set at 1:15 p.m., and Dane Resnick will follow from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The cozy café is also filled with paintings, drawings, and photographs by local artists that are for sale. If you’re trying to get more engrossed in the local arts scene, Acoustic Java is the lunch place for you.

Live entertainment and artwork aside, patrons are also welcome to partake in the shop’s book selection in the back of the store. Chess is also available, as well as free Wi-Fi for the less whimsical.

For the Caffeine Consumer

If their range of entertainment didn’t entice you for a visit, surely their coffee will do the trick.

“We get a lot of people who just like coffee,” Preston said. “Some know a lot about coffee and some are learning customers.”

Novice or caffeine junkie, all are welcome, but everyone should note that Acoustic Java takes its coffee very seriously. Frequent the café often enough, and you’ll spy them unloading the beans in large burlap sacks that nearly fill the back of the tiny, quaint shop. They are then taken to their on-site roaster, which eventually delivers the delicious cups of coffee that their customers can’t get enough of.

The café supports several causes when purchasing their beans, including The Rainforest Alliance, which supports biodiversity and land use. There’s also a cause that caters to birds and their habitats. Of course, they offer organic and fair trade beans, but also support a Carbon Free cause, dedicated to reducing climate impact in the industry.

Those who aren’t able to get their fill at the café can also order their special blends and brews online at their store.

Their big seller in the summer is iced java, hands down. Chai lattes and their supremely roasted coffee are also quite popular.

Not Just for the Coffee Lovers

While coffee is serious business at Acoustic Java, foodies will also delight in their delicious and diverse menu. They have all the soups, sandwiches, wraps, and paninis that one would expect at a café, but with a twist.

“One of our top sellers is the avocado pesto panini,” Preston said. This specialty grilled sandwich capitalizes on the growing trend of avocado, adding in specialty red pepper pesto. They also offer delicious chilli, salads, and breakfast sandwiches. Recommended that you try: the tempeh wrap or the Cali wrap – which comes with turkey, provolone, avocado, and tomato.

Sandwiches are made to order and can be tweaked for any vegetarian or vegan. Preston said, “Our vegan and vegetarian options are definitely one of our strong points and something that brings in customers.”

Baked goods at Acoustic Java are also available vegan or gluten free, but that doesn’t mean they skimp at all on the flavor. Scones, muffins, croissants, and other treats are made fresh, and prices at this trendy café won’t break the bank.

Acoustic Java is open Monday – Friday 7:00 am-7:00 pm, and Saturday – Sunday 9:00 am-6:00 pm.
