First Person to Contact Ebola in U.S. to Appear at Convention in Hyannis

Thursday, October 08, 2015

The 2015 Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) Convention will feature Infectious Disease Control Expert Sean Kaufman and Nina Pham, a Texas registered nurse that was the first person to contract Ebola on United States soil.

Kaufman, CEO and Founding Partner of Behavioral-Based Improvement Solutions, will present  “The Ebola Crisis: Containment Strategies for the Clinical Treatment of Ebola-the Nurses Role" and Pham will her story of suriving Ebola.

According to the MNA, last year Pham woke up with a high temperature and took herself to the hospital. Days later she learned that a patient she treated at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas died from Ebola infection he had carried from Liberia.

Pham contracted Ebola from this patient, but is now treated. However, she is still feeling the after-effects of the experimental drugs used to treat her.

The MNA recently negotiated an agreement on Ebola preparedness with Anna Jaques Hospital, an independent health care facility in Newburyport. The agreement includes a high level of protection for nurses, including rigorous equipment protocols, one-to-one patient limits and color-coded decontamination zones.
