Miriam Hospital’s Nurses Earn Prestigious National Honor

Friday, November 19, 2010

For the fourth year in a row, the Miriam Hospital has been recognized for overall nursing excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program. The distinction is considered nursing’s top honor and is one of the most prestigious designations an organization can receive for outstanding nursing care. Miriam is the only facility in New England (and only among three others in the country) to achieve four-time Magnet status, this year in a unanimous decision by ANCC.

Designation Recognizes Miriam's Adherence to Rigorous National Standards of Nursing Practice

“This tremendous achievement is truly a team effort," said Maria Ducharme, MS, RN, NE-BC, senior vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at The Miriam Hospital. "Our dedicated nurses and talented physicians, caregivers and hospital staff collaborate every day to provide the highest level of quality, compassionate care to our patients." The announcement follows a lengthy application and review process, which included a seven volume, 1370-page application and a three-day on-site visit by ANCC reviewer who conducted 22 interviews with nurses, physicians, staff, patients and the community.

Commitment to Excellence

Arthur Sampson, the hospital’s executive director, shared his congratulations, adding,  “This distinction reflects The Miriam Hospital’s unwavering commitment to excellent patient care and outcomes and is a reflection of how well our entire organization cares for and focuses on the needs of our patients, their families and our employees.” Newport Hospital is the only other Magnet-recognized hospital in Rhode Island.
