Nursing Home Advocates Deliver Petition for a Living Wage to Gov. Baker’s Office
Wednesday, January 06, 2016
The signatures were collected in less than two weeks in December from nursing home residents, family members, workers and other caregivers.
“Unfortunately, wages for our tireless workers are dependent on state funding and there has been little wage increase in more than eight years. More than half of our Certified Nurse Aides rely on some sort of public assistance, and many can’t afford life’s necessities. We are asking the Governor and other political leaders to embrace our Quality Jobs for Quality Care initiative which would provide a critically needed wage increase for these caregivers at minimal cost to the state," said Ned Morse, President of the Massachusetts Senior Care Association.
The Quality Jobs for Quality Care campaign was announced on November 12 in Worcester at the Massachusetts Senior Care Associations annual meeting. The campaign looks to provide a pathway to a living wage which would support a culture of staff retention and continuity for nursing home residents, and establishes a certified nursing aide scholarship program.
