Prepares recent graduates
The program, which will begin in Spring 2015, is designed to prepare recent graduates for employment in a primary care setting. This is the first residency program for advanced practitioners in Massachusetts that trains physician assistants and nurse practitioners in primary care (PAs typically train in a specialty field).
“Advanced Practitioners have always been an important part of healthcare delivery; but with the changing landscape of healthcare, we’re constantly evaluating ways in which we can prepare Advanced Practitioners to increasingly assume the role of a primary caregiver within integrated healthcare teams,” said Marc-David Munk, MD, Reliant’s chief medical officer. “This innovative residency program provides recent graduates with an opportunity to gain extensive exposure to managing primary care patients, in addition to specialty rotations in internal medicine and surgical specialties. We look forward to working with MCPHS University on this program, as the school brings a long-standing tradition of excellence in medical education to the partnership.”
Mentorship
Under the supervision and mentorship of existing Reliant advanced practitioners and physicians, as well as MCPHS University faculty, residents will work with patients in a variety of clinical settings, while also attending weekly lectures over the course of the year-long program. Residents will complete rotations at primary care and specialty care sites.
“This is just one more example of the expanding roles realized from clinical rotations as well as didactic preparation experienced by our students within area hospitals, community health centers and dedicated medical groups such as Reliant,” says Charles F. Monahan Jr., president of MCPHS University.
For the duration of the program, residents will be employed as full-time staff by Reliant and will be offered a pro-rated benefits package that includes paid time off, health insurance, a retirement plan, disability and life insurance, reimbursement for licensure expenses and student loan repayment eligibility after second year if hired into permanent position.
