Ri Students Win Safety PSA Competition

The Injury Prevention Center at Rhode Island Hospital, The Rhode Island Public Health Association and AAA of Southern New England sponsor the competition, which is held to draw attention to National Public Health Week (NPHW). This year’s NPHW theme was “Safety is NO Accident, Live injury-Free.”
“Accidental injury is the leading cause of death among people under 45 years of age,” said Dina Morrissey, MD, program coordinator for the Injury Prevention Center. “Individuals can greatly decrease their risk for an unintentional injury by modifying and changing risky behaviors. The goal of the Safety is NO Accident contest was to raise awareness of the important public health issue of safety and injury prevention.”
High school students were invited to create an original poster or 30-second video clip that sends an important message about safety to their peers and community. Dozens of entries were received from both public and private high schools throughout the state of Rhode Island. A panel of judges that included health professionals, state police, AAA safety officers and occupational health experts gathered to choose the winners, as follows:
- First place - Nick Bower and Gregory Mouradian of Moses Brown School for their video “Buckle Up!”
- Second place - Luke Ritacco and Samantha Schaufler of Westerly High School for their video “Distracted Driving is NO Accident”.
- Third place - Angelina Chiong of East Providence High School for her poster submission.

The winners were presented with awards and prize money by Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts in a ceremony at the Rhode Island State House.
