Shape Up RI’s Summer Nutrition & Fitness Programs

Saturday, June 11, 2011

There's never been a cheaper - or more inspiring - way to get fit this summer.

Take eight weeks to join Shape Up RI's Summer 2011 competition, which begins June 20 and runs through August 15.

Participants can form teams with friends, co-workers, and family members to compete in three exciting categories. “Nutrition Tracking” allows individuals to monitor the amount of fruit and vegetable intake during the competition. In the “Pedometer Steps” category, teams track pedometer steps to see who can walk the most steps. New to the program this year is the “Nutrition Challenge of the Week,” which offers fun and motivating weekly challenges to help participants remain aligned with their healthy lifestyle goals.

Summer's the time to get fit

"The summer is an ideal time to focus on physical activity and nutrition,” said Rajiv Kumar, Chairman and Founder of Shape Up RI. “We are encouraging Rhode Islanders to sign up and get healthy this season by spending time in our beautiful state parks and bike paths, and by visiting local farmers markets."

The cost to participate in the eight-week Summer program is $15, and $20 with an optional pedometer. Team members receive Shape Up RI’s signature aqua-colored reminder wristband, a digital pedometer, a logbook, and access to Shape Up RI’s robust online Team Tracker system, through which they can chart their progress. Participants also receive weekly newsletters via email containing useful tips, inspiration, and updates about dozens of free Shape Up RI events throughout the state.

The power of teamwork and support

“The solution to our national obesity epidemic lies in the power of teamwork and peer support,” said Kumar. “Shape Up RI is the answer – a way to activate and engage Rhode Islanders, build a strong sense of community spirit, and harness the power of teamwork to inspire us to change our attitudes and behaviors toward our health.”

Shape Up RI, sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island, is a team-based wellness program that has enrolled over 230 companies and 65,000 participants over the past five years.
