State Agencies Remove “R” Word

Monday, September 13, 2010

This Wednesday, September 15th at 11am, Governor Carcieri will attend a special joint meeting of the Governor’s Council on Behavioral Healthcare and the Developmental Disabilities Council to thank the Council for their service over the past eight years and to highlight the Council’s accomplishments.

The Governor will also present Certificates of Appreciation to Special Olympics Rhode Island and Advocates In Action for their involvement and support for legislation to change the name of the RI Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals (BHDDH), formerly Mental Health, Retardation, and Hospitals (MHRH). Both organizations supported campaigns to “Remove the R Word” from their departments serving individuals with developmental disabilities. These campaigns were aimed at removing the stigma attached to individuals with developmental disabilities. There will be an unveiling of the new name of the Department on the signage on the campus.

Other speakers will be BHDDH Director, Craig Stenning; House Speaker Gordon Fox; Senate President Teresa Paiva-Weed; Rep. Frank Ferri; Sen. Rhoda Perry; Special Olympics Director Dennis DeJesus; Advocates in Action Director Deb Kney and two participants from those organizations.
