Women & Infants Honored by Commission on Cancer

The award makes Women & Infants one of a select group of 90 currently accredited and newly accredited cancer programs across the United States and the only dedicated women’s cancer program with such distinction in the region.
A tribute to the hard work done every day
“This is a tremendous tribute to the hard work done every day at the Program in Women’s Oncology to help women with cancer,” said Cornelius “Skip” Granai III, MD, director of the program. “We draw together the best combination of technology, skill and compassion in the Program, offering our patients access to the latest research protocols through our affiliation with the prestigious Gynecologic Oncology Group, cutting-edge treatments and a host of integrative therapies.
“We have spent two decades examining how we care for women with cancer and asking ourselves ‘Can we do more?’ As a result, we offer the most specialized care in the region,” Granai added.
Established in 1990, Women & Infants’ Program in Women’s Oncology has built an international reputation for the way its physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists and other staff can blend the highest quality of clinical care with a passion for tending a woman’s soul and including her family each step of the way.
In addition to patient care, teaching, education and research are top priorities in the Program in Women’s Oncology, which is an established leader at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and in the international research arena. Its clinicians sit on the boards of the nation’s most influential cancer treatment organizations.
Recognizing cancer programs that strive for excellence
Established in 2004, the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. The award is granted to facilities that demonstrate a commendation level of compliance with seven standards that represent six areas of cancer program activity: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical management, research, community outreach, and quality improvement.
“Amazing things have happened at the Program in Women’s Oncology since its founding," said Constance A. Howes, president and CEO of Women & Infants, "as the staff cares compassionately for cancer patients and tries to improve their overall quality of life. This type of recognition is well deserved by the Program staff.”
The Commission on Cancer
Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care. Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and representatives of 47 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care.
