Artist Talk: Elaine Smollin, Dawn at Acheron at Hanover Theatre

"Dawn at Acheron" is a cycle of works that reflect on the fate of the individual in history. Large-scale paintings of heroic figures reflect on our efforts to reconcile history with reality. Charcoal drawings, all made on site, create intimate environments of tone and shading.

Smollin is a painter, essayist, and educator. Born in Worcester in 1953, she began her forty-year career in New York City, with a BFA and MFA studies at Pratt Institute, and graduate work in Film and Politics at NYU. Smollin has received a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, held residencies at the MacDowell Colony, and teaches figure painting and sculpture at the Worcester Art Museum.

From C to E: Bach & More for Cello at Pakachoag Music School of Greater Worcester

Pakachoag faculty member Ashley Peck, with guest Shuangning Liu, Piano,  will perform the Prokofiev Sonata for Cello in C Major, also the Bach Cello Suite No. 4 in E flat Major for Unaccompanied Cello. 

Join us and you will also be treated to a selection in D.  So why exactly did the composers pick these keys?  We’ll share a little background on the composers and these famous and beautiful works for Cello.

Ringing in Russias Old New Year: A discussion of holiday traditions with writer and historian Jennifer Eremeeva at Museum of Russian Icons

Throughout Russia’s turbulent history, abrupt social change, and mass immigration, holiday traditions have managed to survive, and even thrive often despite active government repression. 

Join writer and historian Jennifer Eremeeva for a celebration of Russia’s “Old New Year” with tea, gingerbread, and a discussion of the unique fusion of pagan folklore, agrarian influences, Christian traditions, and Soviet modifications that have molded modern Russia’s numerous public and professional holidays.

Worcester Art Museum's lumina Exhibit 

lumina is designed by artist Sam Sam Okerstrom-Lang and Vanessa Till Hooper, and produced by LuminArtz.

“Enter a canvas of moving light and color and connect with works from the WAM collection in a new way! Imagine immersing yourself in a stained glass window or a painting and being surrounded by—and even part of—a cascade of shimmering, radiant, moving light and color. lumina is made of dozens of strips of illuminated silk that reflect projected images of five WAM works of art. Visitors walk through the silk and become part of the animated color and light,” says the Worcester Art Museum on their website.
