The Auburn Mall invites you and your family, especially the young ones, to the mall to take part in and witness "the biggest tiny tots competition of the year." The second annual Diaper Derby will take place on Saturday, February 16th. The race of crawlers will take place 10 am to 1 pm at the Macy's Home Court at 385 Southbridge Street in Auburn.

The competition will consist of 36 local babies competing in 6 heats of 6 babies each. The fastest crawler in each heat will then compete, with the first, second, and third place winners receiving trophies. All racers will receive a goody bag. All babies must be under the age of 12 months and still unable to walk.

Parents will try to motivate their children at the finish line through various in attempts to get their child across the line first. This commonly includes the playing of instruments, holding a child's favorite toy or teddy bear, and generally encouraging them along the way.

"The purpose of the event is simply family fun. It's a really fun event, a chance get together and have a fun morning in the winter," says Sheila Hennessy, Area Marketing Director for Simon Malls.

Other enjoyable activities before, during, and after the race will include coloring and activity sheets, make your own lollipop craft, and make your own cereal or pasta necklace crafts. The day, all told, is sure to be a "bundle of fun."

"Grassroots marketing within Simon is very important. We want to maintain a good relationship with our customers and the community through promotional events," says Hennessy.

The idea originated at Auburn's sister mall, the Southshore Plaza in Braintree, where it was a rousing success. It is now held at 12 Simon Malls across New England.

The first Diaper Derby at the Auburn Mall was very well received.

"There was a lot of laughing," Hennessy jokes, something that will surely be repeated and even multiplied this year.

"The event is gaining a lot of popularity through word of mouth," she says. She notes people have already begun to sign-up.

To register for the Diaper Derby, parents or guardians must visit Guest Services located in Center Court between Zales and Hannoush Jewelers.

The event is sponsored by WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Nutrition Program and Bay State Parent Magazine.
