6 Coolest Craft Classes
Wednesday, October 27, 2010
With Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the holidays looming in formation, it's major crafting season, and we found a cool half-dozen of the state's best classes and workshops.
Hip Projects in Downcity
Craftland, site of all things homespun and fabulous, offers a constant stream of hip, one-day project classes. On November 6, make a fleece winter coat for your dog; November 10th there's a pen and ink class; on the 13th a basic sewing class. For knitters, there's a knitting group that's only $5 on October 28th. Prices on other classes range; for more information, go to Craftland's School of Craft page, here, or call 272-4285.
Creative Jewelry in the Jewelry District
Knotting is the hottest look in jewelry, and artists are using silk, waxed cotton, and hemp, as design elements in earrings and necklaces. Beads of Providence is hosting a Knotting with Silk Class on November 4, where you'll create a necklace using large freshwater pearls, Swarovski bicones and silk cord. Cost is $40, including all materials, 10:30am-12:30pm, 16 Bassett St, Providence,
861-4540.
Colorful Housewares at Kreatalier
Take advantage of this East Side shop's bright, European aesthetic approach to homestyle and create some incredible crafts at their fall workshops. Crafters will love a class on creating a fabric box on November 3rd, hostesses can whip up a festive holiday runner or placemats on November 17th, and who doesn't want to make a hip tea cozy on December 17th? Workshops range from $50-$55, for more information, go to the Web site or call 432-7995.
Crochet Away in Wickford
Crochet is the new knitting, and the Mermaid's Purl Yarn and Bead Shop has several classes coming up for the revitalized craft your grandmother loved so much. Knitters ready to cross over can get started with Crochet for Knitters November 15th, and go on to Make a Tunisian crochet belt on November 29th. Classes are $20. One West Main St, Wickford, 268-3899, or go to the Web site, here, for more details.
Crafting Folk Art in Pawtucket
Repurposing wool fragments is one of the hottest trends in clothing and decorative arts right now, and on November 14, Community Guild Studios at Slater Mill are hosting "Wool on Wool," a special workshop devoted to this art. Bring old wool clothes and work with Rose Ann Hunter to repurpose to folk art decorative pieces using techniques from the 1790s. Register soon as this is bound to fill up. 10am-1pm, $40 for museum members, $45 for non-members. Go to the Web site, here, for more information.
Ultimate Crafting Weekend in Newport
Sometimes you need to immerse, and if paper's your passion, then the ultimate weekend is coming up: three days of scrapbooking at the Newport Marriot Hotel from November 12th-14th. Croptopia's Newport Fall Getaway and Scrap Pink combines craft stations, workshops, and even massages into a long weekend of creativity. For more information, check the Web site, here.
