Arts Worcester Dances to the Moon

Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to paint the town red. ArtsWorcester will be hosting a classic mid-century dance in conjunction with its current exhibit: T-Minus: Worcester to the Moon. On Saturday, May 19th at 8:00 p.m., one of Worcester’s architectural landmarks, the Hotel Aurora, will be revived into a swanky dance hall for Dance Me to the Moon.

All proceeds from the dance will go towards keeping ArtsWorcester openings and exhibits free and open to the public.

“We’re so excited about this. We’ve never done something like this in this building, so we figured why not? We’ve got the space,” said ArtsWorcester’s Executive Director, Juliet Feibel.
The Aurora is the organization’s gallery space and is currently displaying their member’s exhibition and will get a chance to relive its days as a dance hall.

“The classy, old-school ambiance comes immediately from the building. The Aurora is a landmark building for its architecture,” she said.

ArtsWorcester hosts high quality shows, but strives to bring this experience to anyone who’s interested.

“In particular, part of our mission is to keep all of our exhibitions and openings for those exhibits free to the public. The funds we raise from the dance will go specifically to keeping them free to the public,” Feibel said. “From my perspective, art suffers from this misconception that it’s only for the wealthy. The economic diversity of our group tells us regardless of how much money people have, in this area, people want to make and see art

“We want to provide high quality, open exhibitions that are free to the public,” she said. “To have a place located in a neighborhood so acceptable to everyone – we’re right near the hub – that’s really something every city needs. Not every museum or gallery can do that or encompass the range of artists that we can.”

The sponsored show, which is a space technology themed exhibit is part of ArtsWorcester’s biannual industrial heritage show, which showcases the city’s long history of manufacturing. “In the past, we have done mold making and wall paper. This year, the art in the show has all been inspired by the theme of space. They took it in a million different directions,” Feibel said.

Music from all eras will be playing at the event, which is $10 for students, $15 for ArtsWorcester members, and $20 for regular admission.
