Ask a Bartender: Where are the Best 19th Holes in Central MA?
Sunday, July 12, 2015
I consulted golf professional Jim Fenner to weigh in on some of the best golf courses to enjoy a cocktail this summer. Fenner is a private instructor who has been involved with the sport since age seven, so there is no doubt he won’t steer anyone wrong. Here are some top picks from the both of us:
Green Hill – If you want to feel like you’ve left Worcester, without actually paying tolls or sitting in traffic, this is the place to go. “Great views. People go there just for the bar, not even to golf,” says Fenner. And he is right. Sit on the patio and enjoy the views, or set yourself up in the lounge for a laidback night. This is one of Worcester’s gems.
Clearview Country Club – A 9-hole course, you won’t have to wait long to get to the cold beer at the end of the round. The laidback, casual atmosphere of this Millbury Course is great if you’re looking for a low-key afternoon off. Where else can you get a beer and a hot dog for under $5? Well, when Coney Island is closed, of course.
Holden Hills Country Club- The Double Eagle Grill is just a phone call away by the time you get to the ninth hole at this course. Call in your BLT, or whatever strikes your fancy on their pub menu, so it is ready by the time your ice cold draft is poured. They have a great menu for outings so consider selling this up for your company’s summer outing.
Cyprian Keyes Golf Club – Not only can you catch Fenner here most days, you can also sip on a Smithwick’s while you wait for the all-you-can-eat prime rib buffet to start at 5:00pm on Fridays. The views are spectacular, and the prices in the restaurant are reasonable. They’ve even been known to host a beer and wine tasting night throughout the year.
“Any time you can sit outside and enjoy a good cocktail, that is what determines a great 19th hole,” says Fenner.
If you feel like breaking out of Worcester County for the day, head out to Granite Links in Quincy. When it’s time for lunch or dinner you can head into The Tavern at Quarry Hills, which has been ranked by a number of golf publications, including Golf Digest. In addition to The Tavern, Granite Links is home of the Crossing Nines, a patio bar perfectly situated at the junction of three of the 9-hole courses. Here you can enjoy delicious cocktails such as the Moscow Mulligan and Signature Swing.
