2. The Factory of Terror in nearby Fall River, Mass., seems like the kind of place that’s creepy all year round, not just this time of year. Housed inside an authentic factory in Fall River’s historic mill district, the walk through tour boasts more than 25 rooms of fright.
3. The Great Hurricane of 1938 wrecked havoc on Rhode Island’s shores, but at sea, two ships left anchored off Misquamicut were stranded. Captain Bates commanded one of the vessels and his soul is rumored to have made it to shore and taken up residency at the Sandy Shore Motel, now known as the “Bates Haunted Motel.” With tales of survivors on life boats and grasping to pieces of the shipwreck, with no food or water, cannibalism became rampant and partially devoured corpses landed on the shore of where the Bates Haunted Motel is located today. Every year in October, the ghosts of the dead arise to haunt anyone who dare cross their path. The motel opens Thursday, October 14th and runs through Halloween (considered a PG-13 event; not recommended for little ones).
4. Fortress of Nightmares at the centuries-old Fort Adams in Newport offers two separate attractions: The Tunnels of Terror Haunted Maze, a terrifying walk through the dark tunnels of the Fort; and Fortress Ghost Hunts, where visitors take in a legitimate paranormal investigation.
5. Historic Wickford Village's October Spooktacular: A Mystical Event, is a dark walk into the paranormal and occult experience with a psychic parlor emporium, a spell casting cauldron, face painting and more from October 15–31 at the Tea Leaf & Tarot on Main Street. For information call, 545-0303.
7. Join the Iron Guild for Molten Metal Monster Mayhem at the 5th Annual Halloween Iron Pour at the Steel Yard in Providence on October 29th. Browse ceramic goods crafted by Steel Yard Ceramics Cooperative members and enjoy the musical stylings of the Empty House Cooperative.
8. Newport’s Ballard Park presents its 8th Annual Pumpkin Tour, a not-to-miss spooky walk through the forest on trails covered by the darkness of night and illuminated by more than 1,000 jack-o-lanterns. The tour is Saturday, October 16th, 4:30-9pm and is perfect for families.
9. Paranormal expert Carl Johnson leads ghost tours at Slater Mill in Pawtucket and explores the mysteries that haunt the historic cotton spinning mill on the banks of the Blackstone River. In case there’s any doubts as to its abnormal activity, an episode of Ghost Hunters was filmed here.
10. For many families, the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at Roger Williams Park Zoo has become a tradition. See more than 5,000 artfully carved pumpkins, and join in special events including nights where children are encouraged to come in costume, and new this year, an all-you-can-eat BBQ buffet on the Jambo Junction Serengeti Deck. Spooky Zoo event days include enjoy Trick or Treat stations, pumpkin carving demonstrations, a costume contest, live music, games, animal encounters, costumed characters, pumpkin treats for the animals and more.
12. Rory Raven leads the Original Providence Ghost Walk sharing tales of terror and mystery that unfolded in the Renaissance City. Saturdays and Sundays only.
13. Kids are invited to come in costume and meet some captivating critters – prickly, hairy but not too scary at the Children's Museum in Providence from 1-3pm on Halloween, recommended for ages 3 - 11.
