Another snowstorm is on the way, and lifestyle expert Candita Clayton has great ideas for eco-friendly fireplace logs. Are they the cleanest-burning thing you can use? How green are they?
Candita recommends...
Enviro-Log: Made of 100 percent recycled wax old corrugated cardboard (WOCC). They generate more energy per pound than wood or other firelog brands, burn 60-70 percent cleaner than wood, and can be used for cooking, heating, and recreational purposes. Other features include:
- Made from 100 percent recycled, non-toxic materials (food-grade wax and cardboard)
- 50% more energy per pound
- 30% less emissions
- 80% less carbon monoxide
- 86% less creosote
Java Log: Made from coffee grounds recycled from retail outlets, manufacturing plants, office buildings, and homes, this product has more to crow about:
- Diverts 12 million pounds of coffee grounds from landfills per year
- Emits up to 78% less carbon monoxide and up to 66% less creosote than cordwood fires
- Features renewable all natural-based waxes
Where to get them: Enviro-Logs are available at major hardware and grocery retails, as well as at Whole Foods, and online, here. Pine Mountain Products (Java-Log) are available at major hardware retailers, markets, Target and Walmart and also online, here.
