Central Mass Film Festival’s Highlight Event Coming In October

Tuesday, August 06, 2013

See some of the best work local filmmakers have to offer October 18 and 19.

The main event of the Central Mass Film Festival (CMF2) will be taking place on Friday, October 18, and Saturday, October 19, hosted by the local Future Focus Media Co-op. The organization will be accepting submissions, short films and feature length movies, from filmmakers from Worcester and throughout the New England region to be shown.

The Central Mass Film Festival was started in July 2012 by students involved in the Future Focus Media Co-op, an organization that teaches youths the fundamentals of photography and videography. It is part of the Worcester Roots Project.

"It was born from the students asking one simple question, 'Why isn’t there a film festival in Worcester?'", remarks Dee Wells, co-founder of the Central Mass Film Festival and Future Focus Media Co-op.

"The purpose of CMF2 is to highlight the arts and to shine a spotlight on the many talented actors, producers, directors, writers and great people in the film industry that call Central Massachusetts their home," describes Wells.

They began showing films in October 2012 with small monthly events, leading up to the main event this October.

Of course, the Festival will be an ideal opportunity for local filmmakers to get their names out in public and have their films, that took so much effort, time and money to create, shown to a wider audience, but it is about so much more than that, according to Wells. Most importantly it adds energy and creates interest in an already vibrant local arts scene.

"Events such as this benefit the City of Worcester, Worcester County and all the residents that call the area their home," says Wells.

CMF2 allows people in Worcester and Central Mass to see films that they may not have heard about or seen.

And because there’s a Q&A session, people can hear directly from the producer, director and often times the actors involved with the film about the film and what it was like working on the film.

Worcester's Thriving Arts Scene

It appears many outside the area have begun to take notice of Worcester's unique characteristics that make it advantageous for the arts. A number of feature films have recently been filmed in the Worcester area, Wells notes. This includes American Hustle, starring Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence and directed by David O. Russell, and Warner Bros.' The Judge.

"There have been countless other films shot in Central Mass that have included actors such as Cameron Diaz, Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman, to name a few," Wells adds.

Ultimately, though, CMF2 is about the smaller filmmaker hoping to make it big, and film festivals such as this are always a great start. Wells notes how she has enjoyed the process of helping to organize this important cultural event.

"That’s the beautiful thing about working with young adults and ultimately working with a cooperative such as the Worcester Roots Project; the ability to try new things and shine the spotlight on various people and places in the City of Worcester," he remarks.

"CMF2 has plans to grow and this is just the beginning," Dee further adds.
