Clark U. to Host Lecture on Theater & the Role of Women in Society

During the lecture, Sullivan will look at the writings of 18th century thinkers Rousseau and Montesquieu to examine their views on the dangers and benefits of the theater with regard to the role of women in society.
Kristina Wilson, associate professor of art history, will provide commentary.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
Vickie Sullivan
Sullivan is author of “Machiavelli's Three Romes: Religion, Human Liberty, and Politics Reformed” and “The Comedy and Tragedy of Machiavelli: Essays on the Literary Works.” Her most recent book, “Montesquieu and the Despotic Ideas of Europe,” is due out in 2017.
Sullivan has published articles in The American Political Science Review, History of European Ideas, History of Political Thought, Political Theory, Polity, and Review of Politics.
Kristina Wilson
Wilson’s research interests include 19th and 20th century painting and sculpture, modern design and architecture, and the history and methodologies of art history. Her research has focused on American painting in the interwar years, the birth of modernist design in the U.S. in the early twentieth century, and the history and criticism of museums.
Wilson is author of “The Modern Eye: Stieglitz, MoMA, and the Art of the Exhibition, 1925-1934” and“Livable Modernism: Interior Decorating and Design During the Great Depression.”
