Don’t Miss: Manton Avenue Project Gala June 6

Thursday, May 26, 2011

What do you get when you combine playwrights of all ages, a very old man’s birthday party, some of Rhode Island’s favorite actors and deep dark secrets?

A party you can't afford to miss to benefit one of Rhode Island's most creative youth arts organizations.

The Board of Directors of The Manton Avenue Project and Gala Chairs Paul Brooks and Barbara Meek will "stage" their 2011 Gala fundraiser, “GRANDPA HUGH IS ONE-HUNDRED-AND-TWO! YAHOO! a birthday party musicale," on June 6 from 6-8:30pm, at the Angell Blackfriars Theater, Smith Center for the Arts, Providence College.

Celebrity playwrights, kid playwrights

It's a great idea. Far-flung family members are gathering for a very special occasion: the 102nd birthday party of the beloved but befuddled Grandpa Hugh.  But beneath the frivolity, we discover that secrets are being harbored, secrets family members are finding hard to contain.  Who better to tell than Grandpa Hugh?  After all, he wouldn’t tell a soul, what with his 102-year-old foggy mind. But is it as foggy as everyone thinks?

Half of the eight tiny plays will be written by Manton Avenue Project Kids and performed by adult actors. The other four plays will be written by local celebrities specifically for MAP Kid/adult actor duos. On this year’s celebrity playwright list are: novelist Allen Kurzweil, Providence Councilwoman Sabina Matos, Rhode Island Philharmonic resident conductor Francisco Noya and mentalist and Providence Ghost Walk guide Rory Raven.

Famed local actors, kid actors

The adult actors are from local companies such as Trinity Repertory Company, the Gamm, Perishable Theatre, 2nd Story Elemental Theatre and Improv Jones.  Slated to be part of this year’s all-star lineup are Robert Casey, Jr., Kevin Delaney, Richard Donelly, Katie Hughes, Jeanine Kane, Brien Lang, Sarah Lewis, Michael LoCicero, Rebecca Noon, F. William Oakes, Erin Olson, David Rabinow, Anne Scurria, Casey Seymour-Kim, Kelly Seigh, Gabby Sherba, Tim Thibodeau and Joe Wilson, Jr.

Proceeds benefit the Manton Project's mission of giving children from Providence's Olneyville neighborhood and chance to use the stage as a way to express themselves.

Tickets are $50, and can be reserved online, here, or by calling 331-7007.
