Don’t Miss: Oscar Night America This Weekend

Thursday, February 24, 2011

Roll out the red carpet, Rhode Island. It's Oscar time.

While Hollywood gets the party going, Rhode Island picks up the style and arts with its own big celebration this Sunday, February 27, when FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) hosts Providence's Oscar Night® America party.

Walk the red carpet past the paparazzi. Experience the thrill of the 83rd Academy Awards® with RIIFF, celebrate the stars of the region’s film industry and people who love film. As Oscar hosts, James Franco and Anne Hathaway take the stage in Los Angeles at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre, Rhode Islanders will be able to join John Deluca and Allison Alexander of ABC6 live at the VMA Arts & Cultural Center.

The RIIFF celebration is one of 50 official Oscar® viewing parties in cities across the country and is the only official sanctioned Oscar Night® America party in Rhode Island.

Local film luminaries on the A-list

This year's special Red Carpet Guests include writer/director Dan Hannon (The Pond), producer Francine DiChiara (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Transformers, Sex and the City and Bride Wars), award-winning documentarians Stacia Teele (Afghanistan: Defying Silence), David Bettencourt (You Must be This Tall, Behind the Hedgerow), Don Manley and Michel Schtakleff (Old House Soul) and Mary-Kim Arnold, Executive Director, Rhode Island Council for the Humanities (RICH).

The cost is $50 for those participating in the Red Carpet Reception, which includes hors d'oeuvres, drinks, live music, raffle and screening of the Academy Awards. For those who wish to only watch the Awards ceremony on RIIFF’s large 36-foot screen, tickets are $10; doors opening at 7:45 pm. The host and emcee for this year's event is Bob Burke.
