Don’t Miss: Rough Point Soiree in Newport

Saturday, August 28, 2010

Talk about getting behind the hedgerow.

Enjoy a rare chance to spend an evening on the terrace at Rough Point, Doris Duke's legendary Newport estate, next Tuesday, August 31.

Garden Soirée at Rough Point, a fundraiser for the Newport Restoration Foundation, channels the founding spirit of the organization with those things she most loved. Take a short guided stroll through Doris Duke’s kitchen garden, led by Rough Point gardeners, and continue to the terrace for drinks and passed hors d’oeuvres created by Tallulah on Thames, each inspired by Doris Duke’s recipe collection and the vegetables in Rough Point’s kitchen garden. Listen to classic jazz recordings (Doris's favorite!) while you admire the sunset from the oceanfront solarium.

The Foundation was formed in 1968 by Doris Duke with the express purpose of preserving, interpreting, and maintaining landscape and objects reflecting Aquidneck Island’s 18th- and 19th- century architectural culture. Since its founding, the NRF has preserved or restored 83 historic buildings; the foundation currently owns 71 homes that it restores and maintains.

Garden Soirée at Rough Point,  Tuesday August 31, 5-7pm, Doris Duke’s Rough Point, 680 Bellevue Ave, Newport. $65 per person, rain date September 1. Reservations required:  846-4152 or online here.
