Hanover Theatre To Host Film-Inspired Photo Exhibit
Friday, March 08, 2013
"From magic lanterns to digital processes, the invention of the moving image has proven to be one of the most important cultural developments of the 20th century," says the artists' statement.
"Movies have become a deep well of collective memory whose plot lines, memorable dialog, and powerful camera work settle deep into our consciousness. This collaborative show takes inspiration from the movies, especially the illusion at the heart of cinema, a process by which a moving image is produced by the rapid succession of 24 still images per second."
The artists' photographs will be hung side by side, according to ArtsWorcester's Cynthia Woehrle, to invite viewers to discover the relationships between the two and the connection to history itself.
"The resulting images are as nostalgic as they are curious...History buffs and enthusiasts of old movies are likely to find muses in these works. Considering its multilayered history, the beautifully restored Hanover Theatre is the perfect host for this exhibit," she says.
In the photographs by Dr. Wilcox, "streets and storefronts are seen as theatrical sets. Mannequins and objects in window displays are filled with dramatic potential."
Peter Wise's technique draws from film production, and "mimes the language of film with photo stills, jump cuts, and arrangements that suggest the editing process of film." The results of both approaches are unexpectedly eerie and provocative.
"At times the photographs and photomontages stand alone to suggest their own fictional film-related potential. Alternatively, the work has been arranged to speak to one another, establishing links between the imagery in form or content," the artists' statement continue.
The solo and group exhibitions that ArtsWorcester hosts throughout the year are selected through the Spring Gallery Call. The Gallery Call seeks exhibition proposals from their membership. These proposals are then reviewed by two committees and then plugged into the calendar. The first committee does a blind review and then makes recommendations to the second committee, who is in charge of fitting the recommendations into their calendar.
"Our mission at ArtsWorcester is to exhibit and promote contemporary local art. As a member-based non-profit, it is important to us at ArtsWorcester that and exhibits are granted through a thoughtful and fair process," says Woehrle.
An opening reception for Double Exposure will take place at the Franklin Square Society Gallery at the Hanover Theatre on Wednesday March 20, from 6-8 PM. This event is free and open to the public. To see the exhibit after the opening, or for more information about it, contact ArtsWorcester at 508-755-5142 or [email protected]. Or visit the ArtsWorcester website.
