Enjoy a Summer Movie at the Common

Friday, June 08, 2012

If you’re looking for something to do on summer nights, downtown Worcester is the place to be. Worcester Film Works will be repeating their popular events from last year, screening three movies for free over the summer. All screenings will also feature food from local vendors, popcorn and Polar soda, and live music before the movie.

“Our goal here is to get people to come hang out downtown,” said Eric Kuczarski who has helped put on the screenings. “We want to let people know it’s okay to go downtown. It’s not the scary place it might have been 10 or 15 years ago. People still have that impression, and we’re working to change that.”

Last year, Worcester Film Works screened 80s favorites Back to the Future, Grease, and Spaceballs. This year, the group is hoping to cater to film fans of cult classics.

“Last year was our first year of putting it on. We showed three movies last year and that’s our goal again this year,” he said. “We tried to go along with the more popular, wide-interest movies this year that really draw a following.” Last year’s screenings drew hundreds of people a night.

This year’s line-up includes Raiders of the Lost Arc, Jaws, and Princess Bride. The group tried to branch out across the decades to get to others’ interests.  Showings are scheduled for June 21, July 19 and August 16, all Thursday nights.

“We want to let people know that you can have fun on the commons at night,” Kuczarski said.

Worcester Film Works is also looking to garner local support in their choices of food vendors.

“In our ideal world, it’s these small, local restaurants that people that live in Worcester might not even know exist and give them some exposure and get people to realize what food opportunities are available in the city,” he said. “We try to work with business that are around downtown.” This year’s there’s talk of getting Eric’s La Patisserie.

Movies start around 8:30-9:00 at night after bands go on. The stage is set up behind City Hall, and seating is available in the performance oval.
