Family Fun at the Harvest Home Celebration
Friday, November 02, 2012
"The event is a celebration of Community Harvest Project’s 2012 harvest, and it’s also a benefit to support Community Harvest Project’s work going forward," says Kristin Bafaro, Executive Director of the Community Harvest Project.
Community Harvest Project (CHP) is a non-profit organization with a mission to build an engaged and healthier community by bringing volunteers together to grow fresh fruits and vegetables for hunger relief. CHP is headquartered at the Brigham Hill Community Farm in North Grafton, with additional operations at White's Farm in North Grafton and Cheney Orchards in Brimfield.
"In 2012, Community Harvest Project grew and donated 250,000 lbs. of fresh fruits and vegetables to the hunger relief network in Worcester County with the help of over 9,000 volunteers. We’re thankful for the help of all of the community members who came together to make that happen – volunteers, donors, program partners. We couldn’t do it without them!" explains Bafaro.
The day, celebrating these achievements and further helping the cause, will feature a number of fun events for all ages; these include pony and hay rides, crafts and games for kids, face painting, and moon bounces. Bobo the clown will make an appearance, and there will also be a Civil War encampment and farm equipment on display, as well as alpacas. In addition, one may wish to try some great seasonal food including squash soup, cranberry-nut bread, pumpkin and apple tarts and much more. Live music will be played by Jubilee Gardens and friends.
"We hope that people have a fantastic time, and we hope that they learn more about Community Harvest Project’s work and are inspired to become a part of it", Bafaro Says.
Perhaps the most exciting part of the day will feature trebuchets built by WPI and MIT students competing in a pumpkin and apple tossing competition. There will be a giant apple cannon doing the same.
"The event is all about having a great time for a great cause," says Bafaro. "Plus it’s a beautiful setting…a great way to spend a fall afternoon!
Admission at the gate is $5, but there is a cap of $20 per family, and kids under 12 get in for free.
