Family Matters: Snowmen Outdoors & In

After the week of weather we've had, how could the theme for Family Matters be other than snow, snow, snow? Read snowy books and make snowmen indoors and out.

 

Kido Tip 1. Read snowy books.

 

Storytime has been our families favorite way to the end the day since my boys were babies. Now that my kids are old enough to read on their own storytime may mean they read to us. Sometimes we select stories centered around the season and winter is one of our favorites. Find a list of our favorite snowy reads on Kidoinfo.

 

Kido Tip 2. Make a snowman outside.

 

After you have read some snowy themed books like The Biggest Best Snowman and Ehlert’s book, Snowballs make your own snowman or snow family. Gather up a bag of goodies (coffee beans, birdseed, corn, buttons, crackers, etc.) then head outdoors to roll some snow and adorn or dress your own snow creation.

 

Kido Tip 3. Make a snowman inside. 

 

Collage your own snow people indoors. This simple project can be adapted to kids of all ages. Materials needed: Glue stick, scissors, scraps of paper, wrapping paper, old magazines, buttons, sequins, sticks and other found small found objects. Cut or rip paper to form snow base. Adorn with found objects. Once snow people are done create your own story with your snow characters. (Detailed instructions on Kidoinfo.)
